100 parents, alumni discuss Schenley High closing
Sunday, November 11, 2007

About 100 parents, students and alumni of Pittsburgh Schenley High School gathered yesterday at the Cathedral of Learning to discuss their strategy for keeping their school intact.

Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Mark Roosevelt announced last month that he plans to close Schenley and open four new schools configured for grades 6-12.

The parent, student and alumni group, called Save Schenley, plans to rally outside Tuesday's Board of Education meeting, and to ask the school board to slow down its decision-making process.

"The plan is not well defined," said Paul McKrell, an alumnus who organized yesterday's meeting. "Before money is spent and taxpayer funds are allocated, we want to know more. We're asking the board to slow down and talk to us before they make more decisions."

Specifically, said Mr. McKrell, the group wants a copy of reports detailing an asbestos problem at the school. Mr. Roosevelt has said that renovating the 91-year-old school building would cost $64 million, in part because of asbestos removal.
