Plan would close Schenley High, create grade 6-12 schools
Wednesday, October 31, 2007
By Joe Smydo, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Mark Roosevelt today announced a plan that calls for closing Schenley High School at the end of the school year and creating four new schools serving grades 6 through 12 over the next two years.

The plan announced today is for the second year of "Excel.9-12, The Plan for High School Excellence." The first year focused on the school environment.

The Schenley building may need as much as $60 million in repairs, including asbestos abatement. Mr. Roosevelt said the repairs are "too expensive."

The four schools serving grades 6 through 12 in the proposal are:

Pittsburgh International Baccalaureate World 6-12 school at the former Reizenstein Middle School building with students from the IB program now at Schenley and the international studies program at Frick, a middle school, in fall 2008.

University Partnership 6-12 school at the former Milliones Middle School for students who were assigned to Schenley by neighborhood as well as others who choose it in fall 2008. Students in Schenley's robotics technology magnet will move to Peabody High.

Creation of Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts 6-12 by adding the existing middle program at Rogers to the high school program Downtown in 2009-10.

Creation of a science and technology program serving grades 6 through 12 at the current Frick building for 2009-10.

The plan also calls for Vann, a Hill District school serving pre-kindergarten through grade 8, to close next fall.
